As a young breeder and lover of all animals I can see, we read a lot of things but didn’t take them too seriously, as we assumed we were doing a lot of things right already. Little did we know in 2016, our Rottweiler litter from the Ch Freud haus of Lazic and Aysha would mark our first proper experience with hypoglycemia. Prior to this, we didn’t take the deaths of pups too seriously; we decided to take every death to the labs for tests to know how to prevent them from reoccurring in our kennel.
A litter of four beautiful puppies was growing nicely; milk flow was in excess; they were dewormed well and were growing better than expected; we had an unusually big puppy that was growing out of proportion; that’s as compared to the other three. When he began to act sluggishly, we attributed it to his size and laziness, rather than seeking help immediately. It was only after its death that Dr. Kojo Akpabey did his thing and advised us on what to do (in the link) for all our puppies going forward.
Since then, to the glory of God, we haven’t had any issues with hypoglycemia anymore.
I hope you learn from our mistakes and take nothing for granted. Run tests on all deaths and sickness in dogs of all ages.
